Workshops and Residencies: Expanding the Artisan Economy

Kabira, president of Cooperative Tizi Nougdal, are now hosting their own workshops in Setti Fadma. You can now book workshops directly with them at theanou.com/experiences

For several years, visitors have been able to book lunches and visits with artisans through Anou. These experiences have provided a way for people to meet the makers behind Morocco’s craft and for artisans to earn directly from their work.

Now, we’ve expanded this system so visitors from around the world can book workshops — and soon residencies — directly with artisan groups across Morocco.

All workshops are managed through Anou’s platform. Artisans first learn how to host and manage workshops at our Fez Store, where they receive training on pricing, logistics, and communication. Once they gain basic proficiency, they can activate their accounts and open bookings in their own communities. Each group sets its own prices, and Anou adds a 20% community contribution to cover costs for artisans managing visits and to support the wider Anou community.

Kenza, Anou Artisan Leader and President of Association Tithrite facilitates a weaving workshop at the Anou Store in Fes.

We now work with tour agencies and independent travelers to make it easier to connect visitors with authentic experiences. Anou’s workshops have been featured in major travel guides — including Lonely PlanetRough Guides, and Le Guide du Routard — and were even recommended by The New York Times as one of the top winter travel experiences.

It’s one of the most effective ways to begin channeling the might of Morocco’s tourism industry toward actual makers — not intermediaries or foreign-run businesses.

This approach helps artisans develop new skills, diversify their income, and take ownership of the growing demand for authentic cultural experiences. By putting artisans at the center of how tourism operates, we’re building a more sustainable and equitable artisan economy — one that truly works for artisans.

If you have questions, contact hello@theanou.com or visit our Fez store, where Anou’s artisan team can help plan your visit or book directly at theanou.com/experiences
