The group's story
In their own words
Numedia Tabudrart is a women's cooperative founded at the beginning of 2019 by three ladies named Khiera, Naima and Sophia from the village of Imelghass Ait Bouguemez of the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco.
Before the founding of the cooperative, the women used to work individually in their houses and made their own rugs which are rarely presented for sale. This made them think about setting up a cooperative that could allow them to work together and to exchange their experiences in the pursuit of valuing their products by sharing them with people all over the world. As the cooperative grew, other women joined and the cooperative hopes many more will join in the future.
Choosing the name was not random--it is a name deeply rooted in Amazigh history. Numedia refers to an ancient Amazigh kingdom which is one the symbols of the power in Amazigh history. In the past, it was common to name a daugh Numedia, as it signified strength and unity, just as the past kingdom was. Tabudrart is the translation of the word mountainous and it is included in the name due to the fact that the women are proud to be from the mountains.
Today, the women in Numedia Tabudrart Cooperative are ready to share their style, symbols and imagination with anyone who shares their affinity for traditionally woven rugs and wants to invest in their bright future.

The people behind every piece
Aicha Meskour
Aicha Meskour is one of the first women who joined Numedia Tabudrart Coop. She
was born in 1949 and grew up in the village of Iskatafen. There she lived with her mother,
who taught Aicha to love weaving and make several different types of rugs. Aicha married in
2000 and lives with her husband after her only daughter has married and has a family of
her own. Joining the coop enables Aicha to reach different parts of the world thanks to the
rugs she can make with her own hands.
Fatima Imharken
Fatima Imharken was born in 1971 in Ikhef Nighir, a village in Ait Bouguemez (βthe
happy valleyβ) of the High Atlas. After getting married, she moved to another village in the
valley called Imelghass, where she lives with her husband and four children. When she was
young, her mother provided her with the chance to discover the world of rug making. Today,
she is one of the members of Numedia Tabudrart Coop and she is willing to share her rugs
with anyone from any corner of the world.
Khira Meskour
Khira Meskour is a mother of seven children, four daughters and three sons. She
was born in 1958 in Iskatafenand, but now lives in Imelghass, a village in Ait Bouguemez
(βthe happy valleyβ) of the High Atlas. She didnβt have the chance to attend school as was
the case for many people of the rural areas at that time. Being illiterate didn't stop her from
learning something useful, especially after she decided to learn about making rugs from her
mother and grandmother. Their knowledge was a book for her, where she learned a lot. In
the beginning of 2019, Khira and other women founded Numedia Taburart Coop in order to
show the world their rugs.
Aicha Moussaid
Aicha Moussaid is one of the women working in Numedia Tabudrart Coop. She was
born in 1967 in Taghoulit, one of the villages of Ait Bouguemez (βthe happy valleyβ) of the
High Atlas. After getting married she moved to another village in the valley called Imelghes,
where she now lives with her husband and four grown children. Thanks to her mother and
her aunts, Aicha learned to make her own rugs and became part of this coop in the
beginning of 2020.
Naima Outeglaout
Naima Outeglaout is the youngest woman in Numedia Tabudrart Coop. She was born on October 10, 1995 in Imelghass, one of the villages in Ait Bouguemez (βthe happy
valleyβ) of the High Atlas. Today, Naima still lives in the same village with her husband and their child. She learned about the weaving through her eldest sister after her mother had passed away. Thanks to other old women in the cooperative, she can learn more about the world of rugs and improve her weaving style .
Fatima Ahzmad
Fatima Ahzmad was born on April 4, 1970 in Figuig. After her fatherβs retirement,she moved back to her home village of Ikhef nighir, a village in Ait Bouguemez (βthe happy
valleyβ) of the High Atlas. After returning home, she married, and now has two daughters and two sons. Her love for weaving started when she was a teenager thanks to her mother who helped her learn about making rugs. Fatima joined Numedia Tabudrart in 2019.
Sophia Ait Elhoussine
Sophia Ait Elhoussine was born in 1960 in Timgallouna, a village located on the
Mβgoun River in the Rose Valley of the High Atlas. She moved to Ait Bouguemez after getting married. Unfortunately, in the beginning of November 2020, Sfiaβs husband was one of the victims of Covid 19 and she is now a widow. As it is the case for most of the ladies of Numedia Tabudrart Coop, she learned the techniques of weaving when she was young
thanks to the support of her mother.
