The village of Karmat ben Salm lies in the outskirts of Zrhoun, a city famous for its tomb of the leader of the Idrisid dynasty. The area is a mountainous region famous for its agriculture and animal husbandry. Due to the conservative traditions of the village, many women are prevented from their husbands from leaving their homes. These women, however, possess impressive skills in embroidery, and wanted to be productive members of the community. Feeling stuck, the women of the village came together in 2010 to empower themselves and created Cooperative Al Amal, lead by president Najat Al Wakily. The women now work together to teach each other embroidery and earn meaningful income.
