Handmade by the Following Members of Cooperative Atma
Fadma was born in Ait Hamza and is married to a retired military officer. She never attended school because it was too far away from her home and her family could not afford it. She now studies in the literacy classes provided by the cooperative. Fadma and her husband have one boy and two girls who are all in their twenties. She expects nothing less than four grandchildren from each of her children! She plans on using the income from her sales to help with household expenses but buys personal treats, such as new clothes, in the local market from time to time. In the future she wants to buy a car and learn how to drive it.

Cooperative Atma is most well known for their detailed bohemian style hanbel rugs. These rugs can only be found in the surrounding area of Ait Hamza and carry significant cultural importance. In the past, the carpets were only made for nobility and now serve almost as a currency amongst the women in the village. Many of the motifs found in the hanbal are inspired by Ait Hamza’s local culture and surrounding environment. The women unanimously agree that they are the hardest type of rug to make because it can take one women about a month to make.
