MEET THE MAKERS
Zahra Amzil
Zahra was born in Ouarzazate in the mid 70's and is married with three children. While she did not attend school, she is currently studying at a local center to learn how to read and write. Her primary source of income is through the sales of her rugs. She learned how to weave from her mom and now specializes in weaving and design at the association. Mouzil Zehra 38 years old, born in Lmdina village, married and has 3 kids. Zehra didn’t go to school but was able to attend literacy classes; she learned weaving from early age form her mother. Her specialty is making carpets and drawing on it. From her income she helps her family and she wished to have a prosperous future for this craftsman.
Mina Joud
Mina was born in the Ourzazate region in 1970 and has lived in the area ever since. She enrolled in school but at the end of 3rd grade she dropped out to help support her family. Today, her primary source of income is through the sales her rugs. In the future, she hopes that the association grows and expands.
Biya Lhid
Biya was born in the late 60's and has lived in the Ouarzazate region all her life. While she never studied in school, today she is enrolled in literacy classes at an association. Biya is married and has four children.
Fatima Ait Ihya
Fatima was born in Aguim and moved to the Ouarzazate region when she married. Today, her and her husband have five children. Fatima specializes in all the types of rugs the association makes.
Kabira Ihid
Kabira was born in the 60's and has lived in the Ourzazate region for much of her life. Today, she and her husband have one child whom she supports through the sales of her rugs. She hopes that in the future the association becomes famous and their products are sold widely!
Khadija Chana
Khadija is from Ouarzazate where she now lives with her husband and five children. While she never attended school, she is attending local literacy classes and she hopes that in time she will be able to read and write well. Fatima Alibrahimi
Fatima was born in the town of Zagora and moved to Ourzazate when she married her now husband. Born only in the 90's she is one of the youngest members of the association and often provides new and innovative ideas to all the women.
Fatima Anasiri
Fatima, born in the 80's, is the second youngest member of the association at the time of writing. Fatima did not attend school but is currently studying how to read and write in local literacy classes. She hopes that through her sales, she'll be able to provide for her future family.
VISIT THE VILLAGE
Association Afous Gafous hosts visitors in their village — share tea, watch the artisans at work, and see the craft up close. Visits start at $21 per person, and most of it goes straight to the group.
