The designer

Amy Rich

After years art-directing for interior brands like Habitat, Amy wanted a slower, more personal way to make things — one that looks after the people who make them. She works from a studio by the marshes of Blakeney Point, and the coast runs through her designs: creeks, saltmarsh, sea and pine woods.

Two years ago she came to Fes and began designing with Anou's cooperatives in the Middle Atlas. Each rug here started as one of her drawings, was sampled with the weavers, and was knotted by hand on their looms.

Souk rug by Amy Rich Souk on the loom at Cooperative Nahda On the loom · Cooperative Nahda

Souk

140 × 220 cm · hand-knotted wool

Inspired by the architecture of a village in the Middle Atlas, and woven by the women who live and work there. Bright, warm blocks of colour that hold the heat of the mountains, framed in a deep brown border.

Hand-knotted by Cooperative Nahda. The weavers set their own price and are paid it in full; Anou's community contribution is included.

Souk 2 rug by Amy Rich Souk 2 on the loom at Cooperative Nahda On the loom · Cooperative Nahda

Souk 2

90 × 150 cm · hand-knotted wool

The Souk design melted into organic shapes. It plays with pile length — panels of very long pile beside very short — so the colours spill into each other. You may want to hang this one on your wall.

Hand-knotted by Cooperative Nahda. The weavers set their own price and are paid it in full; Anou's community contribution is included.

Creek rug by Amy Rich Creek on the loom at Cooperative Nahda On the loom · Cooperative Nahda

Creek

180 × 240 cm · hand-knotted wool

A contemporary design drawn from the marshes of North Norfolk, where Amy's studio sits — a dark creek cutting through pale saltmarsh, edged with a black flatweave border.

Hand-knotted by Cooperative Nahda. The weavers set their own price and are paid it in full; Anou's community contribution is included.

Creek 2 rug by Amy Rich Creek 2 on the loom at Association Tadighoust On the loom · Association Tadighoust

Creek 2

180 × 240 cm · hand-knotted wool

Creek inverted and smoothed into one organic line: a single white thread running through deep black wool. Dramatic as it is, and just as strong re-imagined in any two colours.

Hand-knotted by Association Tadighoust. The weavers set their own price and are paid it in full; Anou's community contribution is included.

Shoreline

140 × 220 cm · hand-knotted wool

Tonal greens and rich blues from the sea, sky and pine woods of the North Norfolk coast. Knotted with a neat 1cm pile, so the bands of colour stay crisp.

Hand-knotted by Association Timouzounin. The weavers set their own price and are paid it in full; Anou's community contribution is included.

72 × 250 cm · hand-knotted wool

A runner for a hallway or a long landing: bands of red, rose and plum, each finished with a black and white block at the end.

Anou × Designer Collaborations

An exchange, not a transaction

Usually a designer sends a drawing, the artisans weave what they're told, and nothing comes back the other way. Anou's collaborations work in both directions. Our design partners share Anou's values and spend real time with the artisans, in Fes and in the villages where the women weave.

The artisans see how designers from around the world think about colour, shape and scale, and take what they like into their own work. The designers learn the techniques and the stories behind them. They keep coming back to Morocco, so the learning keeps going.

  • Artisans set their own price and are paid it in full, on every rug.
  • Designers set the price of their designs, and their share goes to them.
  • Every sale includes Anou's community contribution, which keeps the platform and its programs running.
  • Designers give back to the community with their time and skills.
  • Anou hosts designers for free — at the Fes store residency, at our wool mill and with cooperatives across our network — so they can keep coming back.

Amy is the first designer in the program. She comes to Fes every year: she sits with the weavers to work through her designs, and gives her time for free to the visual merchandising of the Anou store in Fes, so the artisans' work is shown at its best.
