Safi is a sea city located between Casablanca and Essaouira. It was founded in the 11th century. ‘Safi’ comes from the Amazigh (berber) word ‘Assif’ that means river. The traveller Ibn Battuta described the city as the city of fish and pottery, due to the local legacy of fishermen and pottery makers. For decades pottery was a man’s business until a group of passionate young women came along, became trained by master potters and came together to create their own pottery cooperative. This is how Cooperative Cerame came about.
