Handmade by the Following Members of Cooperative Atma
Minouna was born in Goulmima, a town buried deep in the Moroccan Sahara desert and moved to Ait Hamza when she married. Her husband is retired and was former construction worker in Ait Hamza. Together, they have 7 kids and many more grandchildren on the way. While Minouna never attended school, she is currently attending literacy classes provided by the cooperative. With the income she earns from her sales, she hopes to save money for her Hajj (an Islamic pilgrimage) and invest the rest into her grandchildren.

Cooperative Atma is most well known for their detailed bohemian style hanbel rugs. These rugs can only be found in the surrounding area of Ait Hamza and carry significant cultural importance. In the past, the carpets were only made for nobility and now serve almost as a currency amongst the women in the village. Many of the motifs found in the hanbal are inspired by Ait Hamza’s local culture and surrounding environment. The women unanimously agree that they are the hardest type of rug to make because it can take one women about a month to make.
