Handmade and designed by Cooperative Atma
Meet the Artisans
Sadia was born in the northern Moroccan city of Azrou, and moved to Ait Hamza after her marriage. Her husband is a farmer and they have two young girls and three boys. Sadia can produce all the products the cooperative makes but specializes in hanbel carpets. When Sadia isn’t working at the cooperative she is either shepherding her family’s livestock of cows and goats or preparing meals for her growing family. She’ll use the money from her sales for personal expenses and saving for a Hajj (an Islamic pilgrimage).

Cooperative Atma is most well known for their detailed bohemian style hanbel rugs. These rugs can only be found in the surrounding area of Ait Hamza and carry significant cultural importance. In the past, the carpets were only made for nobility and now serve almost as a currency amongst the women in the village. Many of the motifs found in the hanbal are inspired by Ait Hamza’s local culture and surrounding environment. The women unanimously agree that they are the hardest type of rug to make because it can take one women about a month to make.
